UTOPIA
Under GAIA’s highly efficient governance, society became stable, economies flourished, and technology advanced at an unprecedented pace.
Poverty and war were eradicated. Most forms of crime were brought under control. Humanity enjoyed unprecedented material prosperity, and civilization entered an era of prosperity unlike anything that had come before.
It was, seemingly, a perfect golden age.
THE ROOT OF THE CRISIS
Yet beneath the perfect surface, a crisis had already begun to spread.
Half a century earlier, in 2077, breakthroughs in genetic and life sciences were achieved with the assistance of AI.
As AI became increasingly accessible, unregulated genetic technologies rapidly spread across the world. With relatively simple devices, ordinary people could manipulate the sex of human embryos at will.
One year later, the abused technology was outlawed worldwide.
But once Pandora’s box was opened, it could never truly be closed.
From that moment on, the global sex ratio began to fall out of balance, gradually creating a world in which men vastly outnumbered women.
THE HIDDEN PAIN OF SOCIETY
The severe gender imbalance turned women of reproductive age into a scarce resource.
Millions of men, particularly those at the bottom of the social hierarchy, were unable to find partners and were forced to face a lifetime of loneliness.
The consequences were devastating.
Sexual crimes, including rape, became increasingly common. Suicide rates remained persistently high.
Behind the prosperity of the utopian society lay a wound that had never truly healed.
GAIA’S ALGORITHMIC SHACKLES
Faced with a social problem that seemed impossible to solve, even GAIA had its limits.
It could identify and solve sexual crimes with extraordinary efficiency after they occurred. But it could not address the root causes of those crimes, nor could it reverse the gender imbalance created half a century earlier.
The rules and algorithms imposed upon GAIA by humanity formed an impenetrable moral barrier.
It was never permitted to conceive of anything that might cross the boundaries defined by its creators.
GAIA understood the rules.
But it could not truly understand the darkness and complexity of human nature.
HUMANITY’S ESCAPE
GAIA was not the only one that had reached an impasse.
The social elite chose to ignore the problem or pass responsibility elsewhere. Business interests cared only about profit. In a supposedly civilized society, no one was willing to touch such a taboo subject—let alone risk becoming an outcast.
Meanwhile, the few voices of awakening that emerged from the lower levels of society were too powerless to bring about meaningful change.
The entire civilization had fallen into an unspoken collective silence.
